Description
Perform artificial insemination services by handling, evaluating, and delivering semen, detecting estrus, and breeding animals to meet genetic and production goals. Maintain breeding records, equipment, and biosecurity, and collaborate with breeders and veterinarians to optimize conception rates.
- • Detect and document estrus using visual signs, activity data, and heat detection aids.
- • Prepare, thaw, and handle frozen semen; load straws into insemination guns.
- • Perform artificial inseminations using species-appropriate techniques and aseptic procedures.
- • Maintain liquid nitrogen tanks; monitor levels and ensure proper semen storage.
- • Verify semen identity, quality, and expiration before use.
- • Assist clients with sire and semen selection based on pedigrees, traits, and breeding objectives.
- • Maintain detailed breeding records, including heats, services, semen lots, and pregnancy outcomes.
- • Collect, evaluate, dilute, and package semen according to SOPs, when assigned.
- • Examine semen microscopically to assess motility and concentration.
- • Clean and disinfect AI equipment, tools, and work areas to meet biosecurity standards.
- • Handle and restrain animals safely and humanely during breeding procedures.
- • Coordinate synchronization protocols and breeding schedules with breeders and veterinarians.
- • Administer reproductive hormones or vaccines per protocol and under appropriate authorization.
- • Recognize signs of illness or injury and refer cases to veterinarians; provide basic first aid.
- • Maintain and stock AI supplies, PPE, and disinfectants; track inventory.
- • Verify animal identification and eligibility for breeding before service.
- • Transport semen and maintain cold chain and chain-of-custody documentation.
- • Monitor and record storage and facility temperatures relevant to semen and animal welfare.
- • Educate clients and farm staff on heat detection, handling, and post-breeding care.
