Description
Design and deliver adapted physical education to students with disabilities, aligning instruction to IEP goals, assessing motor development, and ensuring safe, inclusive participation across school settings.
  • • Review adapted PE practices and documentation to ensure compliance with district and state/federal regulations.
  • • Request or order specialized adaptive PE equipment per school procedures.
  • • Write progress reports summarizing student performance, motor development, and social participation.
  • • Attend professional development and IEP/team meetings to stay current with APE practices.
  • • Develop and update APE goals, accommodations, and service minutes within students' IEPs.
  • • Provide timely, positive feedback to build skill, confidence, and engagement.
  • • Deliver individual and small-group adapted PE instruction aligned to IEP goals.
  • • Plan lessons and unit sequences based on IEPs, assessments, and functional abilities.
  • • Maintain confidential records of attendance, services, assessments, and progress.
  • • Maintain an inventory of instructional materials, adaptive devices, and safety aids.
  • • Conduct motor screenings and formal evaluations to determine APE eligibility and needs.
  • • Establish clear routines and behavior expectations to ensure safe, effective learning environments.
  • • Communicate observations and progress to students, families, general PE teachers, and administrators.
  • • Assist with student placement, scheduling, and service delivery models (push-in/pull-out).
  • • Monitor and assess ongoing physical progress using data and observation.
  • • Advise staff on student abilities and necessary adaptations, equipment, or safety considerations.
  • • Differentiate instruction and modify activities by age, ability, and sensory or behavioral needs.
  • • Provide APE services to students with a wide range of disabilities across grade levels.
  • • Teach fitness, gross motor, perceptual-motor, and sport/game skills using adapted techniques and equipment.
  • • Collaborate with general PE teachers, therapists, and support staff to plan inclusive activities and schoolwide events.
