Description
Design and deliver individualized adapted physical education for learners with disabilities by assessing motor needs, writing IEP goals, implementing targeted instruction, monitoring progress, and collaborating with school teams to ensure safe, equitable access to physical education and related activities.
  • • Review APE programs and practices for compliance with IDEA, Section 504, and district policies.
  • • Request or order physical education and adaptive equipment per procurement procedures.
  • • Write reports summarizing assessments, student performance, and physical development.
  • • Attend professional development, workshops, and meetings to stay current in APE practices.
  • • Develop, write, and revise IEP goals, objectives, and service plans for students.
  • • Provide specific, positive feedback to motivate students and build engagement in PE.
  • • Deliver APE instruction to individuals or small groups aligned to assessed needs and goals.
  • • Prepare lesson plans aligned with IEPs and students’ functional abilities.
  • • Maintain confidential records of attendance, participation, and progress.
  • • Maintain an inventory of instructional equipment, materials, and aids.
  • • Conduct motor assessments to determine eligibility and service needs for APE.
  • • Establish and reinforce behavior expectations to ensure a safe, effective learning environment.
  • • Communicate observations and progress to students, families, teachers, and administrators.
  • • Assist with screening, eligibility determination, and placement in APE programming.
  • • Monitor and evaluate students’ physical progress and changing needs.
  • • Advise educators on student abilities, accommodations, and modifications for PE and school activities.
  • • Adapt instructional techniques, rules, and environments to student age and skill levels.
  • • Provide APE services for students with intellectual disabilities, autism, TBI, orthopedic impairments, and other conditions.
  • • Teach adapted fitness, gross motor, perceptual-motor, and sport skills.
  • • Collaborate with PE teachers, therapists, and other staff to design inclusive activities and programs.
