Description
Review manuscripts, proofs, and digital content to identify and mark grammatical, typographical, and formatting errors; verify corrections and ensure consistency with house style and specifications. Coordinate with editors and production staff without performing substantive editing; may proofread braille where required.
- • Detect and mark errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, usage, and formatting using standard marks or track changes.
- • Reread corrected proofs to confirm all edits have been applied accurately.
- • Compare figures, tables, names, and citations against source documents to catch discrepancies.
- • Consult dictionaries, style guides, and reference works to resolve grammar and usage questions.
- • Flag inconsistencies in style, terminology, numbering, and cross-references.
- • Check layout elements—headings, captions, page breaks, and pagination—for accuracy and consistency.
- • Communicate queries and change recommendations to authors, editors, and production staff.
- • Route or upload marked proofs to editors, designers, or typesetters for revision and approval.
- • Read proofs aloud or perform cold reads to identify errors and awkward phrasing.
- • Maintain change logs and version control across drafts and deliverables.
- • Use word processors, PDF annotators, and CMS tools to review, annotate, and archive copy.
- • Ensure adherence to house style, client specifications, and accessibility requirements; proofread braille where applicable.
