Description
Work in tandem with proofreaders to compare original copy with proofs, reading or following text to call out punctuation and detect discrepancies in spelling, grammar, figures, and formatting; note or mark issues and help ensure all corrections are applied.
- • Read source copy aloud, calling punctuation, capitalization, symbols, and line breaks.
- • Follow line by line while a partner reads the proof to verify exact agreement with the original.
- • Compare figures, tables, URLs, and proper names between source and proof to spot discrepancies.
- • Note or mark omissions, transpositions, spacing, and typographical errors using standard marks.
- • Record corrections, queries, and page references for handoff to editors or typesetters.
- • Use style guides and reference tools to confirm spellings, hyphenation, and usage.
- • Ensure consistency of headers, footers, folios, and repeated elements across pages.
- • Route marked proofs and maintain organized files or digital logs of proof passes.
- • Read proof sheets aloud clearly and at a steady pace, spelling unusual words and proper names.
- • Support accessibility workflows by assisting with braille or screen-reader copy checks when required.
- • Recheck revised proofs to confirm that indicated corrections were made.
