Description
Set up and operate collating machines to assemble printed sheets, signatures, tabs, and inserts in the correct sequence. Includes booklet makers and inline finishing systems.
  • • Start the machine and pull first-off sets to confirm order, count, orientation, and registration to covers or tabs.
  • • Verify that stocks, grain direction, folds, and trim sizes meet machine limits and job requirements.
  • • Adjust job programs to set sequence, pocket assignments, batching, and tab or cover insertion.
  • • Change over pockets, guides, wheels, and tooling for different sizes or stocks.
  • • Clean feeders, belts, sensors, and delivery sections after runs.
  • • Clean, lubricate, and perform minor repairs or adjustments using hand tools.
  • • Collect and inspect random sets during runs to verify sequence, completeness, orientation, and quality.
  • • Load job setups from the control panel or scan barcodes or marks to program pockets.
  • • Review job tickets to determine quantities, sequence, stock specs, tab positions, covers, and finishing instructions.
  • • Load collator pockets with signatures, sheets, tabs, and covers; adjust side guides, pile height, joggers, and calipers.
  • • Set feed vacuum or air, overlap, and speed to maintain consistent throughput.
  • • Input job parameters, target counts, and batch sizes into the machine controller or bindery software.
  • • Monitor sensors and HMI messages; clear jams and resolve doubles, misses, or skew conditions.
  • • Stage and verify all components, versions, and revisions before starting the run.
  • • Set and verify miss, double, and sequence detection using cameras, calipers, or barcode or mark readers.
  • • Track counts, spoilage, and run rates; update job status in production systems.
  • • Direct or coordinate helpers or material handlers for loading, unloading, and packing.
  • • Save or document job setups, pocket maps, and notes for repeat work.
  • • Maintain time, production, and quality records.
  • • Monitor humidity and static; adjust air, ionization, or anti-static agents as needed.
  • • Monitor inventory of consumables such as cartons, bands, film, staples, and glue, and request replenishment.
  • • Set up or operate auxiliary finishing equipment such as booklet makers, stitchers, trimmers, folders, shrink-wrappers, or conveyors.
  • • Count, band, box, and label finished sets or booklets; verify pack counts and pallet tickets.
  • • Follow safety procedures and keep the work area organized.
