Description
Apply preventive medicine and public health expertise to promote health and reduce risks for individuals and communities. Provide population-based and clinical prevention services, including risk assessment, screening, counseling, and management, to prevent disease, injury, disability, and premature death.
  • • Train medical and public health staff on preventive medicine practices.
  • • Document and review comprehensive patient histories with emphasis on occupational and environmental risks.
  • • Prepare preventive health reports with problem analyses and recommendations.
  • • Supervise or coordinate physicians, nurses, analysts, and other staff as needed.
  • • Deliver presentations to professional and community audiences.
  • • Evaluate the effectiveness of risk reduction measures and other interventions.
  • • Identify populations at risk for preventable diseases or injuries.
  • • Design or use surveillance tools, such as screening protocols, lab reports, and vital records, to identify health risks.
  • • Lead public health education initiatives on preventable diseases, injuries, nutrition, sanitation, water safety, waste disposal, vector control, and immunizations.
  • • Conduct epidemiologic investigations of acute and chronic diseases.
  • • Develop and implement interventions to address behavioral determinants of disease.
  • • Direct or manage prevention programs in areas such as occupational, infectious disease, aerospace, or environmental medicine.
  • • Design, implement, or evaluate health service delivery systems for targeted populations.
  • • Coordinate resources across healthcare institutions, social service agencies, and public safety to improve community health.
  • • Provide information on health hazards and recommended interventions to the public, media, healthcare professionals, and local, state, or federal authorities.
