Description
Enforce laws and protect life and property by deploying and handling a trained police canine to detect odors, track and apprehend suspects, search buildings and areas, and support patrol operations. Responsible for canine care, training, certification, documentation, and community outreach, and for lawful, safe K-9 deployments and court testimony.
  • • Track, locate, and assist in apprehending suspects with a police canine.
  • • Deploy the canine to detect narcotics, explosives, firearms, or articles as certified.
  • • Conduct building, area, vehicle, and article searches using established K-9 tactics.
  • • Provide public safety by deploying the canine during patrols, calls, and emergencies.
  • • Evaluate calls to determine safe, lawful, and effective K-9 deployment.
  • • Establish perimeters and coordinate units during tracks or searches.
  • • Issue verbal warnings and manage announcements prior to K-9 searches, per policy.
  • • Maintain constant control of the canine to prevent unintended bites or escapes.
  • • Apprehend suspects using appropriate force options, including canine engagement per policy.
  • • Document deployments, alerts, captures, bites, training, and outcomes in detailed reports.
  • • Maintain chain of custody for evidence or contraband located via canine alerts.
  • • Testify in court regarding canine certification, training, deployment, and alert reliability.
  • • Operate and inspect a K-9 vehicle, including heat alarms and transport kennels.
  • • Provide daily care, feeding, grooming, exercise, and bonding for the canine.
  • • Monitor canine health; administer first aid and medications; coordinate veterinary care.
  • • Conduct regular training and scenario drills; maintain certifications and training records.
  • • Safely handle and account for training aids, hides, and odor sources per policy.
  • • Inspect, clean, and maintain K-9 equipment such as leashes, collars, muzzles, and harnesses.
  • • Use the canine to search for missing, lost, or endangered persons.
  • • Assist high-risk warrant service and building entries with K-9 support.
  • • Support traffic stops and vehicle searches with canine sniffs when legally permissible.
  • • Perform area security sweeps for events, schools, facilities, and vehicles.
  • • Coordinate with dispatch and supervisors to relay K-9 status, requests, and results.
  • • Photograph scenes, tracks, and finds; map tracks and search areas as needed.
  • • Review deployments for legal compliance, officer safety, and policy adherence.
  • • Provide scene control and crowd management while managing the canine.
  • • Assist with prisoner searches, transports, and disturbances with canine support as allowed.
  • • Render first aid to persons as trained and ensure canine welfare at scenes.
  • • Educate the community through K-9 demonstrations and safety presentations.
  • • Guide assisting officers on K-9 tactics, containment, and crossfire safety.
  • • Maintain home kennel and housing in compliance with agency standards.
  • • Decontaminate and rehabilitate the canine after exposures or strenuous deployments.
