Collects blood for tests, transfusions, donations, or research; explains procedures, ensures proper labeling and handling, and monitors patients or donors, assisting with adverse reactions.
  • • Collect blood and other specimens using approved collection procedures.
  • • Dispose of blood, body fluids, and tissue per laws, standards, and policies.
  • • Dispose of contaminated sharps in compliance with regulations.
  • • Document specimen routing from collection to laboratory receipt and analysis.
  • • Perform arterial blood draws using approved techniques, when authorized.
  • • Perform capillary punctures (heel or finger stick).
  • • Perform venipuncture using vacuum tube, syringe, or butterfly methods.
  • • Explain specimen collection procedures and aftercare to patients and donors.
  • • Label specimens and match laboratory requisitions to containers.
  • • Set up, organize, and clean phlebotomy trays; ensure sterile, single-use instruments and supplies.
  • • Administer subcutaneous or intramuscular injections within licensing limits.
  • • Calibrate, operate, or maintain equipment used for blood or plasma collection.
  • • Collect timed specimens for therapeutic drug monitoring and other timed tests.
  • • Conduct hemoglobin or hematocrit checks to assess donor iron levels.
  • • Perform permitted point-of-care tests (e.g., blood alcohol, glucose) and collect specimens for cultures, smears, and drug level testing per protocol.
  • • Screen donors for suitability based on interviews, vital signs, and medical history.
  • • Enter patient, specimen, insurance, and billing data into information systems.
  • • Monitor patients and donors during and after procedures; respond to adverse reactions.
  • • Process and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis.
  • • Forward laboratory results to authorized clinicians per protocol.
  • • Provide post-draw care and serve refreshments to donors.
  • • Train and mentor staff in phlebotomy or specimen handling techniques.
  • • Transport specimens from collection sites to laboratories.
