Description
Serve as a member of a supreme or appellate court, interpreting the Constitution and laws, deciding appeals, and issuing precedential opinions that guide lower courts and resolve significant legal disputes. May exercise limited original jurisdiction and help oversee judicial administration.
  • • Hear and decide appeals on questions of law from lower courts.
  • • Interpret constitutions, statutes, and precedents to resolve cases.
  • • Review briefs, records, and motions to identify dispositive legal issues.
  • • Participate in oral arguments and question counsel.
  • • Deliberate with other justices and vote on outcomes.
  • • Author and join majority, concurring, and dissenting opinions.
  • • Affirm, reverse, modify, or vacate lower court judgments.
  • • Issue orders, stays, writs, and injunctions as authorized.
  • • Rule on motions and emergency applications, including stays.
  • • Decide petitions for discretionary review.
  • • Clarify and harmonize conflicting decisions from lower courts.
  • • Establish or amend court rules and procedures where authorized.
  • • Promote uniform application of law and uphold judicial standards.
  • • Oversee court administration and supervise chambers staff and law clerks.
  • • Participate in judicial conferences, committees, and governance.
  • • Address attorney discipline or contempt matters within the court’s jurisdiction.
  • • Adjudicate matters within the court’s limited original jurisdiction, when applicable.
  • • Provide public information about the judicial system consistent with ethical rules.
  • • Coordinate on court operations with other branches while preserving independence.
  • • Officiate wedding ceremonies where permitted by law.
