Description
Design footwear and related components. Create original shoe designs or adapt trends into functional, manufacturable products.
  • • Direct and coordinate pattern engineers, model makers, and sample room staff in last selection, pattern cutting, stitching, and sample builds.
  • • Evaluate sample shoes on and off foot forms and wear testers; refine lasts, patterns, cushioning, and detailing for fit and aesthetics.
  • • Sketch concepts and detailed footwear renders; create 2D/3D CAD and tech packs with colorways, construction, materials, and components.
  • • Partner with merchandising, sales, product managers, and clients to align design direction and briefs.
  • • Define target consumers for lines by category, gender, age, and price point.
  • • Track trends via footwear and material trade shows, consumer insights, and competitive reviews.
  • • Select leathers, textiles, foams, and outsole tooling; specify construction methods (cemented, Strobel, vulcanized, injection).
  • • Provide sample pairs for sales; coordinate line reviews, showrooms, and factory sample timelines.
  • • Translate high-fashion or performance concepts into commercially viable, manufacturable shoes.
  • • Source reference shoes, lasts, components, and trims to inform design.
  • • Visit tanneries, material libraries, and vendors to review leathers, meshes, soles, and innovations.
  • • Collaborate with apparel and accessories teams to align color stories, graphics, and capsule collections.
  • • Design custom footwear for athletes, clients, retailers, or entertainment productions.
  • • Work with costing and sourcing to set target FOBs and retail prices for styles.
  • • Create or revise upper patterns and overlays; define cutting lines, seam placements, and material yields.
  • • Develop cohesive footwear collections and support go-to-market across e-commerce, retail, and wholesale.
  • • For productions, consult with directors and stylists to define footwear concepts, period accuracy, and plans.
  • • Specify and oversee testing for materials and components (abrasion, flex, colorfastness, slip) and care guidance.
  • • Direct or build uppers and mockups using stitching, lasting, bonding, and 3D printing where appropriate.
  • • Research historical and cultural footwear styles and technologies for film, theater, or heritage projects.
