Description
Design fashion accessories such as handbags, belts, hats, scarves, jewelry, and small leather goods. Create original accessory designs or adapt trends to meet brand, market, and functional needs.
  • • Direct and coordinate teams creating patterns, prototypes, and finished accessory samples.
  • • Examine accessory prototypes on models or forms, refining fit, scale, and function.
  • • Sketch rough and detailed drawings of accessories and create specifications for color, construction, materials, hardware, and finishes.
  • • Confer with sales and management executives or clients to discuss accessory design ideas.
  • • Identify target markets for accessory designs, considering age, gender, lifestyle, and socioeconomic status.
  • • Attend fashion and trade shows and review trend reports to gather information about accessory trends and consumer preferences.
  • • Select materials (leather, textiles, metals) and production techniques (stitching, molding, casting) for products.
  • • Provide accessory samples to agents and sales representatives, and arrange showings at sales meetings or fashion events.
  • • Adapt other designers' accessory ideas for the mass market.
  • • Purchase components and reference accessories as needed to complete designs.
  • • Visit leather, textile, and hardware showrooms to stay current on materials and components.
  • • Collaborate with other designers to coordinate special products and collections.
  • • Design custom accessories for individuals, retailers, or theatrical, television, or film productions.
  • • Determine target costs and prices for accessory styles.
  • • Create patterns and templates for accessories and cut materials according to patterns.
  • • Develop accessory collections and market them through boutiques, e-commerce, and catalogs.
  • • Read scripts and consult directors and other production staff to develop accessory concepts and plan productions.
  • • Test materials, hardware, and finishes or oversee testing so that care, durability, and compliance labels can be created.
  • • Assemble mockups or samples of accessories using sewing, casting, molding, or 3D prototyping tools.
  • • Research historical accessory styles and periods needed for film or theatrical productions.
