Description
Handle, train, and deploy an explosive detection canine to locate explosives or explosive odors in facilities, vehicles, cargo, and public areas. Perform specialized canine care, search operations, reporting, and safe handling, storage, transport, and accounting of training aids in accordance with safety protocols and applicable laws.
  • • Assess search areas, threats, and access points to plan canine detection operations in compliance with laws and SOPs.
  • • Guide the canine through systematic search patterns to ensure thorough coverage of designated zones.
  • • Establish and mark safety perimeters; brief personnel and control access during K9 operations.
  • • Conduct canine-led searches of people, bags, vehicles, cargo, rooms, and outdoor venues for explosive odors.
  • • Deploy, handle, and recover approved explosive training aids or pseudo-scents under strict handling and accounting procedures.
  • • Document search routes, locations, alerts, and outcomes using logs, maps, or digital tools.
  • • Maintain training, certification, deployment, and aid inventory records to meet legal and agency requirements.
  • • Use checklists and tracking tools to verify complete coverage and quality of searches.
  • • Inspect, fit, and maintain canine equipment such as leashes, harnesses, muzzles, GPS, and radios.
  • • Coordinate search sequencing and handoffs with other teams to maintain continuity of operations.
  • • Set up staging areas, signage, and equipment; load and unload the canine and gear safely.
  • • Confirm and report canine indications and clear areas per protocol, using standardized terminology.
  • • Transport, store, and secure the canine, equipment, and training aids in accordance with safety and biosecurity procedures.
  • • Initiate and run detection training scenarios; apply reward-based reinforcement and obedience drills.
  • • Drive and operate vehicles to move the canine and equipment to assignments while following transport and welfare policies.
  • • Prepare, label, seal, and log training aids; maintain chain-of-custody and expiration tracking.
  • • Maintain inventory of canine supplies, PPE, and training materials; order or request resupply as needed.
  • • Inspect and maintain kennels, crates, vehicles, and comms equipment; coordinate repairs or service.
  • • Operate radios and other communications systems to coordinate searches and relay status and findings.
  • • Use gloves, sealed containers, and clean handling practices to prevent cross-contamination of odors.
  • • Clean, disinfect, and maintain kennels, crates, vehicles, and work areas to hygiene standards.
  • • Conduct searches in varied environments, including crowds, stairwells, vehicles, and confined spaces, while managing leash and behavior.
  • • Develop site-specific search plans, timelines, and sector assignments for events and facilities.
  • • Record environmental conditions, hazards, distractors, and training performance for after-action reviews.
  • • Conduct scent imprinting, proofing, and maintenance training to sustain detection reliability.
  • • Monitor canine health, hydration, and fatigue; provide rest, first aid, and coordinate veterinary care.
  • • Follow do-not-touch and stand-off procedures; immediately notify EOD or authorities and support evacuations when a threat is indicated.
