Description
Control vehicular traffic around roadwork and other work zones to protect workers and the public, using signs, stop/slow paddles, and hand signals, while setting up and maintaining traffic control devices and coordinating with the crew to keep traffic moving safely.
- • Warn motorists and pedestrians of hazards in and near the work zone.
- • Set up, position, and remove traffic control devices (cones, barrels, signs, and barricades) per traffic control plans.
- • Direct traffic through and around work zones using stop/slow paddles, flags, and hand signals.
- • Monitor traffic flow and adjust controls to maintain safe gaps and minimize delays.
- • Communicate with other flaggers and crew via two-way radios to coordinate lane closures and alternating traffic.
- • Inform drivers of detours, lane shifts, and expected delays.
- • Observe and report dangerous driver behavior or work zone intrusions; record license plates when needed.
- • Discuss traffic control plans, staging, and control-point locations with supervisors.
- • Place and maintain advance warning signs to meet MUTCD and company standards.
- • Check visibility, barricade alignment, and sign condition; reposition or replace as needed.
- • Stop traffic to allow construction vehicles and equipment to enter or exit the work zone safely.
- • Maintain PPE and flagging equipment, including lights and high-visibility apparel.
