Description
Operate and control movable bridges to allow marine traffic while protecting road or rail traffic. Activate signals and navigation lights, communicate with vessels and traffic control, inspect and maintain bridge equipment, log operations and conditions, and may supervise shift operations.
  • • Move levers or use control systems to activate traffic signals, navigation lights, and alarms.
  • • Control bridge machinery to open and close highway or railroad drawbridges and other movable spans.
  • • Stop vehicle and pedestrian traffic and lower or raise gates before and after bridge movements.
  • • Verify bridges are clear of vehicles, pedestrians, and debris prior to opening.
  • • Direct movements of vessels in bridge areas using radio, signals, or loudspeakers.
  • • Observe approaching vessels to determine size, speed, and intent to pass.
  • • Monitor vessel position to ensure safe and efficient use of the bridge opening.
  • • Coordinate with marine traffic, Coast Guard or harbor control, and roadway or rail dispatch.
  • • Record vessel names, types, destinations, bridge openings, and counts of vehicles or trains.
  • • Log operational data such as tides, currents, weather, and opening times.
  • • Inspect bridge machinery, electrical systems, roadbeds, sidewalks, and fender systems; report defects.
  • • Clean and lubricate equipment; perform minor repairs and adjustments.
  • • Write and submit maintenance and repair work requests.
  • • Perform housekeeping and grounds tasks to keep the facility clean and orderly.
  • • Monitor CCTV and radios for requests to open and for safety hazards.
  • • Prepare incident and accident reports.
  • • Test backup power, interlocks, and safety devices on a regular schedule.
  • • Maintain security of the bridge house and monitor the waterway for boat traffic.
