Description
Perform diagnostic ophthalmic ultrasound imaging (A-scan, B-scan, and ultrasound biomicroscopy) to support ophthalmologists in evaluating ocular and orbital pathology. Acquire and analyze measurements, document findings, and assist with ultrasound-guided procedures using aseptic technique. Educate patients and staff while maintaining imaging equipment, safety, and quality standards.
  • • Perform B-scan ultrasonography to assess the globe and orbit, especially with opaque media.
  • • Perform A-scan biometry (contact and immersion) to measure axial length for IOL calculations.
  • • Perform ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) for detailed anterior segment evaluation.
  • • Acquire standardized scan planes and dynamic maneuvers; annotate laterality, orientation, and gain.
  • • Evaluate and document retinal detachment, vitreous hemorrhage, tumors, foreign bodies, and other pathologies.
  • • Measure ocular and orbital structures, including axial length, lesion size, and chamber depths.
  • • Perform ultrasonic pachymetry when ordered.
  • • Prepare patients, verify identity and orders, and explain procedures and aftercare.
  • • Instill topical anesthetic and apply coupling gel per protocol for contact ultrasound.
  • • Use aseptic technique and high-level disinfection for probes and accessories; maintain logs.
  • • Maintain, troubleshoot, and calibrate ophthalmic ultrasound equipment.
  • • Capture, label, and archive images and cine loops in PACS/EMR; ensure image quality.
  • • Compile preliminary measurements and impressions; escalate urgent findings to the ophthalmologist.
  • • Assist ophthalmologists with ultrasound-guided assessments or procedures.
  • • Document relevant ocular history, indications, and contraindications for ultrasound studies.
  • • Educate patients about ultrasound procedures and expected sensations.
  • • Prevent corneal compression and minimize patient discomfort during contact scans.
  • • Follow specialized scanning protocols for trauma, pediatric, and post-operative eyes.
  • • Coordinate scheduling and prioritize STAT and preoperative ultrasound requests.
  • • Train and orient ophthalmic staff or residents in ocular ultrasound techniques.
  • • Participate in quality assurance, peer review, and protocol optimization.
  • • Ensure accurate coding, billing, and documentation for ultrasound services.
