Description
Diagnose and treat epilepsy and seizure disorders using advanced electrodiagnostics, evidence-based medical therapy, and coordinated dietary, device-based, and surgical interventions, with longitudinal multidisciplinary care.
- • Participate in epilepsy research, including clinical trials and outcomes studies.
- • Train residents, fellows, and EEG technologists in epilepsy care and EEG interpretation.
- • Engage in continuing medical education in epilepsy and clinical neurophysiology.
- • Supervise EEG and Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) technologists and ensure safety protocols.
- • Counsel patients and families on seizure types, triggers, prognosis, SUDEP risk, genetics, and reproductive health.
- • Interpret routine, ambulatory, and video-EEG studies; review MEG, MRI, PET, and ictal/interictal SPECT for localization.
- • Refer candidates for epilepsy surgery, neuromodulation, ketogenic diet therapy, or psychological services as needed.
- • Advise other clinicians on differential diagnosis and management of seizures and epilepsy mimics, including PNES and syncope.
- • Prescribe and titrate anti-seizure medications; monitor efficacy, serum levels, interactions, and neuropsychiatric side effects.
- • Arrange and manage rescue therapies and status epilepticus protocols.
- • Coordinate device-based therapies, such as VNS, RNS, and DBS for refractory epilepsy.
- • Prepare, maintain, and review seizure histories, EEG reports, presurgical evaluations, and outcomes.
- • Lead presurgical evaluations, including EMU monitoring, intracranial EEG (stereo-EEG or grids), functional mapping, and Wada testing coordination.
- • Order and interpret laboratory tests, including anti-seizure drug levels, metabolic panels, and autoimmune or infectious workups.
- • Arrange supportive services, such as neuropsychology, social work, occupational therapy, and patient education programs.
- • Conduct detailed epilepsy-focused interviews covering seizure semiology, comorbidities, medications, and family history.
- • Inform patients and caregivers about diagnoses, prognoses, and treatment options; create seizure action and safety plans.
- • Develop individualized treatment plans considering age, comorbidities, pregnancy plans, and lifestyle.
- • Differentiate epileptic seizures from nonepileptic events using clinical assessment and electrodiagnostics.
- • Communicate with schools, employers, and other healthcare providers regarding restrictions, accommodations, and safety.
- • Coordinate multidisciplinary epilepsy conferences with neurosurgery, neuroradiology, and neuropsychology.
- • Perform and interpret prolonged video-EEG monitoring and intracranial EEG; oversee cortical stimulation and mapping.
- • Manage comorbidities and complications of epilepsy, including mood disorders, cognitive effects, and medication adverse events.
- • Examine patients to assess focal neurological deficits relevant to seizure localization.
