Description
Prepare, cut, stain, and map frozen tissue sections during Mohs micrographic surgery for immediate evaluation by the Mohs surgeon; ensure complete margin assessment, rapid turnaround, equipment upkeep, regulatory compliance, and resolution of technical issues.
- • Verify patient and specimen identifiers; orient and ink margins per Mohs map.
- • Embed tissue in OCT; freeze and mount on cryostat chucks.
- • Cut complete epidermal and dermal margins using a cryostat; capture high-quality sections.
- • Perform rapid H&E or toluidine blue staining; coverslip and label slides.
- • Assess slides for technical adequacy; recut or restain as needed.
- • Create and maintain stage maps linking blocks, slides, and the surgical defect.
- • Deliver slides promptly and communicate issues to the Mohs surgeon and care team.
- • Maintain cryostats, stainers, and microscopes; document daily QC and preventive maintenance.
- • Monitor and record cryostat, refrigerator, and freezer temperatures.
- • Prepare and QC reagents and stains; track lot numbers and expirations.
- • Troubleshoot artifacts and instrument problems; arrange service when required.
- • Perform frozen-section immunohistochemistry when ordered (e.g., MART-1, SOX10).
- • Adhere to CLIA/CAP, safety, and infection-control standards.
- • Manage supplies and inventory for the Mohs laboratory.
- • Train new staff and assist with workflow optimization.
- • Participate in validation and implementation of new procedures or equipment.
