Description
Install, test, calibrate, and maintain protective relays, control circuits, and associated substation equipment to ensure reliable detection and isolation of faults in power transmission and distribution systems. May assemble and wire protection and control panels, commission switchgear, and integrate SCADA and metering devices.
  • • Follow electrical safety, arc-flash PPE, lockout/tagout, and clearance procedures.
  • • Coordinate switching orders and clearances with system operators and crews.
  • • Operate disconnects, rack breakers in and out, and apply grounds per procedures.
  • • Install, configure, and calibrate protective relays and other IEDs.
  • • Perform secondary injection and functional tests on relays and trip circuits.
  • • Verify CT/PT ratios, polarity, burdens, and phasing.
  • • Inspect, test, and maintain switchgear control circuits and interlocks.
  • • Troubleshoot relay misoperations and control wiring using schematics and test sets.
  • • Review, implement, and document relay settings and logic; manage files and firmware.
  • • Commission new protection schemes and control panels.
  • • Install and terminate control, CT, PT, and communication wiring in panels and switchgear.
  • • Install and configure RTUs, meters, transducers, and SCADA communications.
  • • Perform end-to-end relay testing with GPS time synchronization.
  • • Analyze fault records, event reports, and oscillography to verify operation.
  • • Maintain and calibrate test equipment and tools.
  • • Update as-built drawings, settings databases, and maintenance records.
  • • Fabricate, label, and install harnesses, terminal blocks, and test switches.
  • • Pull and dress control cables in trays, conduits, and racks.
  • • Mount and anchor relay panels, racks, and auxiliary devices.
  • • Drive company vehicles with tools and test gear to substations and plants.
  • • Train or coordinate work with apprentices, engineers, and line crews.
  • • Respond to outages after hours to restore protection and controls.
  • • Inspect and maintain DC control power systems, including batteries and chargers.
