Description
Deliver advanced, family-centered critical care to infants, children, and adolescents in pediatric intensive and cardiac care units, providing comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, procedures, and ongoing management, prescribing therapies, and coordinating multidisciplinary care in collaboration with pediatric intensivists.
  • • Tailor care plans to age and developmental stage of each pediatric patient.
  • • Provide end-of-life and post-mortem care, including pronouncement and organ donation coordination per policy.
  • • Rapidly assess hemodynamics and diagnostics to determine emergent pediatric interventions.
  • • Order and perform approved diagnostic and therapeutic procedures based on clinical status.
  • • Order and manage blood products; monitor and treat transfusion reactions.
  • • Prescribe and administer weight-based medications via appropriate routes.
  • • Advocate for children and families and provide counseling and emotional support.
  • • Direct setup and management of pediatric monitors, mechanical ventilators, and invasive lines.
  • • Co-manage advanced therapies such as ECMO, inhaled nitric oxide, and CRRT with specialty teams.
  • • Manage fluids and electrolytes; monitor intake and output and adjust therapy.
  • • Detect and treat clinical deterioration, including sepsis, shock, and respiratory failure.
  • • Assess and titrate analgesia and sedation; manage withdrawal and delirium protocols.
  • • Evaluate psychosocial needs of patients and caregivers; arrange support services.
  • • Lead multidisciplinary rounds and develop, implement, and revise treatment plans.
  • • Order labs, cultures, and imaging; obtain specimens when necessary.
  • • Interpret labs, imaging, and physiologic monitoring to guide care.
  • • Perform comprehensive pediatric histories and physical examinations.
  • • Document diagnoses, procedures, plans, and clinical progress; complete billing as required.
  • • Identify nutrition risks; order enteral or parenteral nutrition in collaboration with dietitians.
  • • Prioritize and manage a caseload of critically ill pediatric patients.
  • • Perform or assist with advanced procedures (e.g., endotracheal intubation, central/arterial lines, chest tubes, cardioversion) per privileging.
  • • Ensure safe use, maintenance, and availability of equipment; report malfunctions and safety events.
  • • Troubleshoot device and monitoring issues and respond to alarms.
  • • Assess family coping and understanding; lead family meetings and goals-of-care discussions.
  • • Coordinate consultations and transitions of care, including admissions, transfers, and discharges.
  • • Maintain required certifications (e.g., PNP-AC, PALS); engage in continuing education and professional activities.
  • • Develop, implement, and evaluate evidence-based protocols, pathways, and order sets.
  • • Educate and precept nurses, residents, fellows, and students.
  • • Provide clinical leadership and mentorship to unit nursing staff and APP colleagues.
  • • Lead and participate in pediatric resuscitations and rapid response events.
  • • Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and research initiatives; analyze outcomes to drive change.
