Description
Assess, diagnose, and treat individuals with neurobehavioral problems due to acquired or developmental nervous system disorders (e.g., neurodegenerative disease, traumatic brain injury, seizure disorders, learning disabilities). Recommend evidence-based interventions, including cognitive rehabilitation, psychotherapy, and referral for pharmacologic or surgical care. Conduct pre- and post-operative neuropsychological evaluations for neurosurgical procedures such as epilepsy surgery or deep brain stimulation.
- • Compare patient progress before and after pharmacologic, surgical, or behavioral interventions.
- • Conduct neuropsychological evaluations of intelligence, academic ability, attention, concentration, sensorimotor function, language, learning, and memory.
- • Consult with interdisciplinary teams regarding patients' neurological conditions.
- • Design and implement cognitive rehabilitation plans.
- • Diagnose and treat conditions involving injury to the central nervous system, such as cerebrovascular accidents, neoplasms, infections, degenerative diseases, head trauma, demyelinating diseases, and dementias.
- • Diagnose and treat neural and psychological conditions in medical and surgical populations, such as early dementing illness or neurologically based chronic pain.
- • Diagnose and treat pediatric patients for learning disabilities with developmental or organic bases.
- • Diagnose and treat psychiatric populations for somatoform disorders, dementias, and psychoses.
- • Differentiate psychogenic versus neurogenic syndromes, multiple cerebral etiologies, and complex seizure disorders.
- • Educate and supervise practicum students, psychology interns, and hospital staff.
- • Establish neurobehavioral baselines to monitor progressive cerebral disease or recovery.
- • Identify and communicate risks associated with neurological surgeries, such as epilepsy surgery.
- • Interview patients to obtain comprehensive medical histories.
- • Participate in continuing education, in-service training, and workshops to remain current in methods and techniques.
- • Provide education and counseling to individuals and families.
- • Provide psychotherapy, behavior therapy, and other counseling for patients with neurological disorders.
- • Stay current by reviewing literature, consulting colleagues, and engaging in professional organizations or conferences.
- • Prepare detailed clinical neuropsychological reports integrating data from tests, self-report measures, rating scales, observations, and interviews.
